Stoke on Trent

25th June 2020 – Sailing through Stoke on Trent

The pottery made famous by the great british throw down – and somewhere we’ve wanted to sail to for ages!

So we have been told, pretty consistently by most people we’ve spoken to that Stoke on Trent is a dump and best avoided. So we set our standards pretty low. From Barlaston into Stoke is a few hours sail and it is mostly countryside for the first few miles. The canal passes right along side the wedgewood factory – which is now converted into a Museum – but of course it is not open right now.

So after all this green we awaited the apocalypse. And we waited. Hmm, well, we must have blinked and missed it because for the most part the canal was green, wide, serene and generally lovely!!

One of the things we were keen on doing was seeing the pottery featured in the BBC series The Great British Throwdown. And we sailed right past it! Very cool. We went right through Stoke on Trent and moored just short of the Harecastle tunnel at a delightful spot called Westport lake. We have a early start tomorrow as we are booked to go through the tunnel at 09:00.
