Weedon and Runny Honey

13th-16th July 2019 – The Weedon Saga

Moored at Weedon

Strap yourselves in for the Weedon runny honey experience. We arrived at Weedon after going through the long and curvy tunnel at Braunstone. It is always very impressive to sale through these huge tunnels, especially when you think they were dug so long ago. This tunnel has a few bends as they got a bit lost when digging it out, and they kept hitting quick sand!

We arrived at Weedon in the afternoon and immediately we walked to Tesco express for some shopping – especially fresh fruit and veg, which is quite hard to come by on the canal. Then we settled in.

That night at 01.00, 02.30 and 04.30 Honey exploded. There is nothing quite like being woken by the smell of essence of Dog bum. Poor Honey was really not at all well. The same thing happened on the night of the 14th. By this time we were getting a bit fed up and the boat stank! Luckily for us, there is a very good vets in Weedon, so that’s where we went with the dog. She was very dehydrated and not looking at all well. The vet even thought we may need to make “the” decision. So, we decided the vet should do some tests to see if her chance of recovery was good and to put her on a drip to get some fluids back into her.

Now we have a problem, as with all this clearing up going on, we are out of water on the boat and the nearest tap is about a mile or so down the canal. But, we have to get back for the dog which means turning around! To make matters more complicated, to turn round again after collecting the dog could mean having to go back up the locks, turn around, them come back down them again! Our only hope was that Wilton marina would let us turn round using their entrance – which not all marina’s do.

So we filled with water and turned round and sailed back to where we’d left (literally the same place at Weedon). We got the great news that Honey was basically fit and healthy but just had a really nasty bug causing the issue. So, with some antibiotics and some replacement drugs for her steroids we waited another day to see how she would get on. On the 16th we where chatting to some people and they said we could definitely turn at Wilton – so that is the plan sorted.
